sosuishitsu-ryu

Sosuishitsu-Ryu Jujutsu was founded in 1650 in Japan. It is a pure Ko-Ryu (ancient school). It consists of 40 two person kata divided into five sets of eight. As well as 24 two person kata divided into two sets. One set consisting of 8 arrest kata ( handcuffing/control) and one set consisting of 16 weapons defense (club, knife, gun). From these kata students learn ma-ai (combat distance), Zanshin (combat awareness), as well as the combat strategies found within all Ko-Ryu.
Techniques from the kata are applied to present day self-defense situations. Such as attacks from armed and unarmed opponents, and multiple attackers. This is not Brazilian Jujitsu or MMA. We do not roll around on the floor with our opponents. We put our opponents on the floor in a way that won’t allow them to get back up. Students also learn Koshi-No-Mawari (iaijutsu), the art of drawing and cutting with the Katana (samurai Sword). Calandra Sensei is the President of the International Sosuishitsu-Ryu Jujutsu Association.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOSUISHITSU-RYU JUJUTSU
SOSUISHITSU-RYU JUJUTSU, named after THE “PURE FLOWING WATERS OF THE YOSHINO RIVER,” was founded in 1650 by FUTAGAMI HANNOSUKE MASANORI, a SAMURAI OF BUNGO TAKEDA. A MASTER of the TAKENOUCHI-RYU and many other RYU, MASANORI WENT into the YOSHINO MOUNTAINS and, after a period of seclusion and meditation, developed his own method of cose-combat.

MATAHICHI SHITAMA, another SAMURAI of BUNGO TAKEDA, invited MASANORI to come and live in NOGATA, a town on the SOUTHERN ISLAND of KYUSHU. While IN NOGATA, MASANORI TAUGHT SHITAMA THE SECRETS OF SOSUISHITSU-RYU.
The SHITAMA FAMILY, either through direct lineage on adoption had retained and preserved SOSUISHITSU-RYU for centuries. The records of the SOSUISHITSU-RYU CONTAIN the succession of masters from MASANORI, The first HEADMASTER, to MANZO SHITAMA, The 16TH and present HEADMASTER.
It was SHUSAKU who first allowed NON-JAPANESE students to train. unfortunately SHUSAKU SHITAMA died in the 1960’S. The 12TH Headmaster SHINGOMUNETSUNA SHITAMA was killed during the SAIGO REBELLION. kataThe 14TH Headmaster KIBEI AOYAGI (see picture) carlanda4 attended the July 24TH, 1906 meeting at the BUTOKUKAI MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY in KYOTO, where with other JUJUTSU SENSEI, he helped formalize the KATA of KODOKAN JUDO.

SOSUISHITSU-RYU has 5 series of JUJUTSU KATA. Each series of Kata prepares one to handle different types of attack in combat situations.
There are40 JUJUTSU KATAin all. These KATA contain techniques of ATEMI WAZA (STRIKES), KANSETSU WAZA (JOINT LOCKS), NAGE WAZA (THROWS), SHIME WAZA (CHOKES), and OSAE WAZA (IMMOBILIZATION). These Kata must be performed with proper Maai (distance) and ZANSHIN (MENTAL ALERTNESS) to be correct.

On July 24TH, 1905, representatives of the leading JUJUTSU SCHOOLS OF JAPAN GATHERED at the BUDOKUKAI INSTITUTE in KYOTO the forms of KODOKAN JUDO and to continue the devlopment of the technical forms of the sports.
